Best Time to Get Married in Morocco: A Photographer’s Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to get married in Morocco is mid-October to late November, or March into mid-April. Everyone tells you that. What nobody tells you is that golden hour in Marrakech lasts barely half an hour, roughly a third shorter than at home in northern Europe, and that changes how you build the entire day.

Most guides answer the best time to get married in Morocco with a temperature chart and stop there. Temperature matters, but it is not what determines whether your photographs work. Light does. Wind does. And a calendar that moves eleven days earlier every year does.

We calculated the sunrise, sunset and golden hour length for Marrakech for every month of the year, and compared them against the European cities most of our couples fly in from. The results surprised us, and they should change how you plan your timeline.

The best time to get married in Morocco: the short answer

If you only read one section

Across every factor we track, the best time to get married in Morocco narrows to two windows.

Mid-October to late November. Warm days, cool evenings, the Atlas often has snow on the peaks by late November, and the summer haze has cleared. This is our first recommendation almost every time.

March to mid-April. Almost as good, and the second answer we give couples asking about the best time to get married in Morocco. Everything is green after the winter rain, which you do not get in autumn. The trade-off is that March is statistically the wettest month of the year in Marrakech.

Two windows to avoid. July and August are the worst time to get married in Morocco: Highs reach 37°C, guests suffer, makeup does not survive, and the midday sun is directly overhead. Avoid the Ramadan window, which shifts every year and is covered in detail below.

The one-line version

Book a Saturday in the second half of October. It is the single most reliable combination of weather, light and vendor availability in the Moroccan calendar. It is also the first date to sell out, typically twelve to eighteen months ahead.

The golden hour problem nobody warns you about

Original calculation · Marrakech vs Europe

Latitude drives this, and it is why the best time to get married in Morocco cannot be judged on temperature alone. Marrakech sits at 31.6° north. Paris sits at 48.9°, London at 51.5°. The closer you are to the equator, the more steeply the sun drops below the horizon, and the shorter your golden hour becomes.

This is the least understood factor in choosing the best time to get married in Morocco. We ran the numbers. Here is how long the sun spends in the golden-hour band, from six degrees above the horizon down to sunset, on the fifteenth of three representative months.

City15 June15 October15 December
Marrakech36 min33 min37 min
Rome42 min38 min45 min
Paris50 min43 min55 min
London54 min46 min61 min

A couple planning from London in October assumes they have forty-six minutes of golden light. In Marrakech they have thirty-three. That is a 28% shortfall, and it lands exactly on the portrait session.

This is the practical reason the best time to get married in Morocco matters more than couples expect. You cannot fix a thirty-three minute window by choosing a better photographer. You fix it by building the timeline around it: portraits start before golden hour begins, not when it starts, and the ceremony ends at least an hour before sunset.

Calculated by H264Films for latitude 31.63°N, longitude 7.98°W, on the 15th of each month, Morocco local time (UTC+1). Morocco reverts to UTC+0 during Ramadan, which moves every clock time here one hour earlier.

The takeaway is that whatever you decide is the best time to get married in Morocco, your golden hour is roughly half an hour. What actually changes across the year is when it happens. A December ceremony has to finish by 17:00. A June ceremony can run until 19:30. That single fact reshapes the whole day.

The Ramadan calendar that moves every year

The scheduling trap for international couples

This is the factor that catches out more couples than any other when picking the best time to get married in Morocco. The Islamic calendar is lunar, about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year. Ramadan therefore slides earlier every single year. A month that is completely clear in one year can be entirely inside Ramadan three years later.

YearRamadan (expected)Eid al-Fitr
202618 Feb – 19 Mar20 Mar
20278 Feb – 9 Mar10 Mar
202828 Jan – 25 Feb26 Feb

These dates matter because they can wipe out an otherwise ideal month. Morocco confirms the start of Ramadan only after the crescent moon is physically sighted, through the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs, so any date can move by a day. Treat the window as approximate and confirm closer to the time.

What it actually means for a wedding

  • Vendor availability drops. Many caterers, musicians and crew reduce hours or stop taking bookings during the month.
  • Alcohol service becomes difficult. Restrictions tighten and many venues will not serve. We cover this fully in our guide to alcohol at a wedding in Morocco.
  • The clocks change. Morocco reverts to UTC+0 for the month, so sunset falls an hour earlier on the clock and every timeline shifts.
  • Eid is worse than Ramadan. The two or three days of Eid are a national holiday. Transport is congested and staff are with their families.

None of this makes a wedding impossible, but it does move the best time to get married in Morocco away from that window. It makes it harder and more expensive, and it is the one factor foreign couples almost never check before booking flights.

The chergui, and what wind does to a wedding

May onward · the factor nobody prices in

Wind is the third input into the best time to get married in Morocco, and the one nobody prices in. The chergui is a hot, dry wind that descends from the High Atlas and lifts sand and dust off the desert, cutting visibility. It is most active from late spring through summer, which is one more reason we steer couples away from May to August.

For photography and film the chergui does three things. It ruins veils and loose fabric. It puts a haze over the Atlas that flattens every wide shot. And it grounds drones, because licensed operators will not fly in it.

This is why aerial units on our shoots fly at sunrise rather than at the convenient point in the schedule. If aerial footage matters to you, that alone is an argument for autumn. The permit side is covered in our guide to drone rules in Morocco.

Best time to get married in Morocco, by location

The answer changes with the venue

LocationBest windowWhy
Marrakech riad or PalmeraieOct – Nov, AprCourtyards lose usable light early; you need a late sunset but mild air.
Agafay DesertOct – MarNo shade at all. Outside this window the heat and the chergui are unmanageable.
Essaouira coastJun – SepThe only place that improves in summer. Atlantic wind keeps it cool.
Atlas MountainsMay – Jun, SepRoads and weather are unreliable in winter; summer is bearable at altitude.

Note the contradiction, because it changes the answer entirely.

Essaouira is the exception to everything above: it is the one venue where a July wedding makes sense. If your heart is set on a summer date, move to the coast rather than fighting Marrakech. Our guide to the best wedding venues in Marrakech covers the inland options in detail.

Best time to get married in Morocco: frequently asked questions

What is the single best month, and the overall best time to get married in Morocco?

October. Highs around 27°C, lows around 14°C, a 19:00 sunset that lets a ceremony run to a comfortable hour, and the summer haze has cleared off the Atlas. November is a very close second and often has better mountain backdrops.

How long is golden hour in Marrakech?

Between 32 and 37 minutes depending on the month, which is roughly 28% shorter than London and 20% shorter than Paris. It is a function of latitude, not weather, so it cannot be planned around by picking a different month. Build the timeline to start portraits early.

Can you get married in Morocco in summer?

You can, but inland it is punishing. July and August highs in Marrakech reach 37°C with almost no rain and frequent dust-carrying wind. If you want a summer date, Essaouira on the Atlantic coast runs about 6°C cooler and is the sensible alternative.

Should we avoid Ramadan for our wedding?

For a large celebration, yes. Vendor availability drops, alcohol service becomes difficult, and the country reverts to UTC+0 so every timeline shifts an hour. Ramadan is expected to run 8 February to 9 March in 2027 and 28 January to 25 February in 2028, subject to moon sighting.

What is the rainiest month in Marrakech?

November and March, at roughly 41 mm and 38 mm respectively. Both are still low in absolute terms, and rain in Morocco tends to arrive as short heavy downpours rather than all-day drizzle. Neither month is disqualified; both need a written wet-weather plan.

How far ahead should we book for the best months?

Twelve to eighteen months for a Saturday in October, November or April. If you want licensed drone coverage, start earlier still, because the aviation authorisation alone needs three to four months.
